5 D isruptive innovation, as author Whitney Johnson says in her acclaimed read Disrupt Yourself, is all about upending existing markets by fashioning, doing, or being something truly different in a remarkably astonishing way. Innovators are never complacent, rather “they see a need, an empty space waiting to be filled, and they dare to create something for which a market may not yet exist.” What better time to celebrate such thought- provoking words than the New Year. Right now, industry professionals await in eager anticipation for the 2018 SEMA Show, LA Auto Show, International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and North American Auto Show. Each year, retailers and restylers wonder how automakers and aftermarket manufacturers could possibly improve upon the advancements that served as a gold standard the year prior, yet with every 365 days they do exactly that. Just like Apple’s Think Differently campaign so famously conveyed, “Here’s to the ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things.” Inspired, the editorial staff dedicates the inaugural issue of 2019 to the round pegs in the square holes of our beloved industry. As such, there is an underlying tone of Disrupt Yourself on every page, from examining the impact social media has on modern business practices to “Best in Show” and “Tech, Trends, and Innovation Coming Out of SEMA 2018.” It’s time to dare, dream, and do in 2019!
